Maria helped her mother who had Stage 4 cancer of the brain. The doctor told her that she was suffering from an extremely serious health condition. In February 2014 Menounos started experiencing troubling symptoms. "I'd felt lightheaded while on set, and was suffering from headaches," she told PEOPLE in its exclusive feature.
